Sports Physicals

A sports physical exam, also known as a pre-participation physical examination (PPE), is a thorough medical examination that determines whether or not it is safe for an athlete to participate in a particular sport. Sports physicals are often required for children and teens before they are allowed to join a team sport and are usually repeated before each season.

A sports physical includes a detailed medical history that is usually on a form filled out prior to the exam. The physical part of the exam includes:

  • Recording height and weight
  • Checking blood pressure and pulse
  • Vision test
  • Heart, lungs, abdomen, ear, nose and throat examination
  • Evaluating posture, strength and flexibility

Some exams may also require an electrocardiogram or EKG to further measure the heart. The confirmed healthy results ensure that an athlete is physically capable of participating in his or her chosen sport. At Buckeye Pediatrics, we offer sports physicals to provide confirmation for schools or other sports organizations of our patients' health.

Developmental Screening

Developmental screening is a routine diagnostic procedure used to identify any potential developmental delays. Early detection is a valuable tool in treating nearly every condition, in order to end the problem before it spreads and prevent future damage. Developmental screenings can identify delays that can indicate autism, mental retardation and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, among others.

Screenings can be performed through simple questioning during a regular checkup to ensure that your child is progressing at a rate that is considered normal. This takes only a few minutes at each doctor's visit, but can play a major role in identifying and then treating early developmental conditions.

Behavioral Consultations

Children with behavior problems often cause worry and concern among parents, who many be unsure of how to treat this situation. A behavioral consultation allows our doctor to observe your child's natural activity and interaction, as well as interview yourself, teachers or other involved adults, in order to assess behavior and develop a solution.

Consultations can be performed at any age, but are most common among school-age children. Our doctor will work together with you and your child in order to develop an individualized treatment plan that will be followed through and monitored through family encouragement and subsequent consultations.

Immunizations

While infants are protected from certain diseases at birth because of antibodies passed from the mother, this protection is temporary. Immunization from these diseases can be achieved through vaccination shots, which use small amounts of killed or weakened microorganisms that cause the diseases.

Some of the vaccines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics include:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine
  • Measles, mumps, rubella
  • Chickenpox
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis
  • Hepatitis A
  • HPV

We offer these and other immunizations given at the recommended age for your child and will discuss with you the risks and advantages of each one.

Adolescent Gynecology

Gynecological exams are valuable to adolescents in many ways. It is important for young women to be assessed early, especially if they are sexually active, and to begin a relationship with a doctor that may guide them through many important times in their lives. Our doctors promise special care and confidentiality to their younger patients.

A typical adolescent exam includes a consultation, a full medical assessment and a minimally invasive exam depending on the specific patient. Annual pelvic exams and pap smears are recommended for all women over the age of 18, but younger patients may receive a modified exam. If the patient is not sexually active, a pelvic exam may not be required. Since a gynecological exam may be overwhelming for a teenager, our doctors make sure to carefully and thoroughly explain the exam process and answer any questions the patient may have. They also answer any concerns the patient may have about their bodies as they enter adulthood.

Our doctors are extra sensitive with their younger patients and work hard to develop a trust and begin a hopefully long lasting relationship.
